Grease Yaka is a play about fear.
Fear is fascinating. Fear is passed on. It grows through legend. Fear can be manufactured to intimidate people, cover up the truth and create hatred for others.

The play grew out of the young school-boy cast’s
fascination with fear and the supernatural
However Grease Yaka also resonated with the stirrings of anti-Muslim sentiments in Sri Lanka in 2014
A sequel to the play Grease Yaka Returns !
won 09 awards at the National State Drama Finals in 2019

Grease Yaka was devised around the imagination of a group of school-boys. For seven months the cast actively researched, wrote and improvised to find the beginnings of this play.
The devising process moved through a collective fascination with legendary supernatural characters towards the captivating urban daemon - the Grease Yaka.

Rehearsals
Rehearsals began after the concept of Grease Yaka had been agreed on, the journey of the play set in place and the world of the characters created.
The writers, designers and composers worked closely with the cast throughout the rehearsal process, structuring, developing and refining the play through daily experimentation in the rehearsal room.
